What is Molecule Catalyst?

Molecule Catalyst is the first scientific crowdfunding platform that leverages blockchain to simplify access to capital in fields of research, such as Rare Diseases, Ageing & Longevity and Psychedelic studies.

At its core, the platform utilises a unique funding mechanism rooted in crypto-economic principles that enables individuals to buy in and out of markets they want to support based on open data.

Catalyst is an incentive-driven fundraising platform for scientific research that makes use of smart contracts backed market-makers to determine the price of the IP along bonding curves and DAI (a USD backed stable currency) to overcome the instability commonplace to most crypto markets.

Catalyst marks the first step of the Molecule roadmap towards creating a Web3.0 Marketplace and Exchange for Chemical Intellectual Property (IP).

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I submit a research project to be funded?
There is a KYC process you'll have to follow first - the first step is completing the google form also found in the top menu. Once your submission has been reviewed and approved by the Molecule team someone from project onboarding will reach out about next steps. For the moment, the Molecule protocol creators manually verify all project creators to ensure they adhere to certain standards. This is for your safety and to ensure research partners are legitimate. This is the only centralised management method at the moment, after the projects are deployed via a system of smart contracts, they operate in a decentralised manner.
Why use blockchain for this project?
Blockchain provides the secure immutable infrastructure needed to ensure all transactions are properly accounted for, and to allow the Molecule protocol to manage the funding of projects in a decentralised manner. All funds are distributed to the project being funded once they meet certain goals, and the users contributing to the funding of the project. The contracts are transparent, open-source, and will be audited to make sure you're in good hands!
Does the volatility of the crypto-markets affect the fundraise of a project?
By using DAI (a stablecoin) as the collateral for the market, any fluctuations are purely because of the success or failure of the project, rather than "crypto".
What are bonding curves and how are they relevant in this project?
The bonding curve is the interface to funding the project. It is a market maker, providing liquidity for exchange between Dai and the project tokens. For more information you can visit the Molecule blog for a detailed explainer on how the curves work.
Can I sell out of a market I buy into?
Yes! One of the benefits of using a bonding curve, is that there is instant liquidity - you can sell your tokens without having to wait for a willing seller.
Am I guaranteed to make a return if I buy into a project?
You are not guaranteed to make a monetary return. The money you buy into a market with helps fund the scientific research project directly, and could secure you future value in the form of legal production rights, or possibly dividends from the success of the project.
What if I’m the last person to buy into a project?
Your contribution will still go towards funding scientific research, you're just less likely to make a return on your investment.
What happens to the funds after the funding goal is hit?
These funds are then available to the researcher to finance further research. In the event that a funding goal is not reached, the funds are fairly redistributed back to the original contributors.
