I am a researcher looking for funding. How can I submit a research proposal?
We are looking to support research projects focusing on basic research in drug development. If you are a scientist working in this area, belong to an accredited university or organisation and struggle to secure funding for your experiments, we would love to hear from you.

You can submit a first proposal through the following form. Your submission will be reviewed by the Molecule Catalyst team and we will get in contact with you to discuss the next steps.
Why is Molecule Catalyst relying on Blockchain Technology?
All transactions on Molecule Catalyst are handled by the Ethereum network. This means that all payments are managed in a decentralised way and are directly forwarded to the beneficiary parties without any possible interferences.

Additionally, the use of cryptocurrencies allows anyone to contribute without the need of a credit card or other payment tools and keeps transaction costs low.
Does the volatility of cryptocurrency prices affect fundraising campaigns?
Campaigns on Molecule Catalyst can only accept contributions in Dai. Dai is a stablecoin that aims to be worth exactly 1 US dollar and thus 1 Dai is equal to 1 USD. Researchers also receive their accumulated funding in Dai and are thus not affected by any price fluctuations in other cryptocurrencies.
What are Token Bonding Curves and how are they used?
Token Bonding Curves are a programmatic tool used by Molecule Catalyst to automate the distribution of Project Tokens in exchange for contributions. Additionally, by always collecting a portion of your total contribution i.e the Project Stake, it accumulates a reserve that guarantees a sale price for the Project Token.

In this way, owners can always redeem their tokens without the need for others to sell their holdings. You can find out more about Token Bonding Curves and how they work in detail here. (please revert to section 6)
What happens to the pledged contributions after a funding goal is reached?
When the funding goal for a research phase is reached within the allocated time frame, the funds are released to the research group and will be used to conduct the outlined experiments. In the event of a funding goal not being reached, the funds will be returned to the project stake reserve and you can withdraw it by selling your project tokens.
Will I always be rewarded for contributing to a fundraising campaign?
The reward system on Molecule Catalyst is designed in such a way that it benefits early campaign contributors.

This creates incentives for them to promote the research project in their personal network and improve the chances of success for the fundraise. If you back the project at the later stages of the campaign, you might end up with a decreased value of your Project Stake, but still have contributed to the success of the fundraiser by adding to the reward pool with your contribution.
Do I need to create an account?
Anyone can view the research project details posted on the Molecule Catalyst platform without having an account. However, before you can contribute to a fundraising campaign, you need to connect to our application.

How do I connect to the Molecule Catalyst application?

Instead of relying on traditional methods such as username and password combinations, Molecule Catalyst is using the browser-based MetaMask wallet for identity management. This means:

it is not necessary to provide any account details when using the application. You will solely be identified and remembered by your public wallet address.

After setting up MetaMask, make sure that you are connected to the Main Ethereum Network. Then follow these steps:

  • 1.
  • Connect
Choose to connect with the application by selecting the “Connect” button found in the top navigation bar.
  • 2.
  • Sign into MetaMask
This will prompt the login confirmation from MetaMask and after confirmation you will be able to see your user profile in the top right corner.

If you do not have MetaMask on your current device - visit this easy to follow guide to see an step-by-step on how to install MetaMask on a new device and other devices before using our platform.

How can I contribute to a fundraising campaign?

Before you can contribute to a research project on our platform, you need to meet a few requirements. You can find all the relevant details here (please revert to section 4).

Once you have fulfilled all the requirements on that list, connect to the Molecule Catalyst application and navigate to the project you would like to support, and select the Support Project button at the top of the page.

The Support Project button opens a pop-up where you can simply specify the amount you want to contribute.

Your contribution will only go through if you confirm all transactions prompted by MetaMask.

Below, you can find a detailed description of all the numbers and fields shown when supporting a campaign.

  • 1.
  • Your Balance
The number of Dai you currently hold in your connected MetaMask wallet.
  • 2.
  • Contribution
The input field for the amount of Dai you want to contribute to the campaign. This number needs to be lower than your current wallet balance and below the funding requested by researchers. Changes in this field will affect the values displayed further down.
  • 3.
  • Support
The number of Dai that will go directly to the research funding vault.
  • 4.
  • Stake in the Project
The number of Dai that is sent to the project stake reserve and exchanged for project tokens.
  • 5.
  • Project Tokens
The number of project tokens you will receive in return for your contribution to the research project. This is automatically calculated based on the current bonding curve status.

What can I do with the project tokens I received for contributing to a fundraising campaign?

In return for contributing to a research project, you receive Project Tokens that represent your stake in the respective research project.

Owning tokens of a project allows you to access the Withdraw Project Stake functionality from the project page or your My Projects section.

This opens a pop-up where you specify the number of Project Tokens you want to sell in exchange for the Dai value of your project stake. Once again, the withdrawal will only go through if you confirm all transactions prompted by MetaMask.

Below, you can find a detailed description of all the numbers and fields shown when returning your Project Tokens.

  • 1.
  • Project Tokens
The number of Project Tokens you own.
  • 2.
  • Return
The input field for the number of Project Tokens you want to return. Changes in this field will affect the values displayed further down.
  • 3.
  • Initial Contribution
The number of Dai that was added to the project stake reserve when you initially contributed to the campaign
  • 4.
  • Current Price of Project Tokens
The number of Dai you will get in return for the Project Tokens at the current price.
  • 5.
  • Percentage Change of Value
The percentage change of the value of your Project Tokens since you received them. This value can be positive or negative, depending on the point of time of your withdrawal

How do I read the funding status of an ongoing campaign?

On Molecule Catalyst, funding campaigns are split into several phases that all have their own Funding Goals. This allows researchers to create a more continuous financing model and tie funds to actual results and deliverables. You can find more information on the campaign structure here. (please revert to section 8)

All details about a project’s current campaign status are displayed on the project page.

Below, you can find a detailed description of the values available per project:

  • 1.
  • Total Funding Goal
The sum of all the funding goals for each of the individual phases combined.
  • 2.
  • Total Pledged
The sum of all contributions towards the funding of a research project. This excludes the portion of the contribution that goes into the Project Stake Reserve.
  • 3.
  • Total Released
Only shows the accumulated funding that has been made accessible to the research group. Funding is only released when the goal of the ongoing phase is reached.
  • 4.
  • Phase Funding Goal
The goal for the individual phase. The current status of a phase is shown below the summarised funding values.
